Why ‘I Decided’ is My Mood for 2017

“Thanking God for all my setbacks, ‘cause He’s the reason I’m able to get back..”

I couldn’t think of a statement or lyric any truer to start this post off with. Whole ‘lotta setbacks for MAJOR comebacks. This collective piece of work describes my true resiliency. If you’ve been living under a rock (trust me, I’ve been there before) or just not hip to the hip-hop genre, you may have missed the latest release from Detroit-native, Big Sean. What’s even cooler is, if you’ve watched the many interviews, hearing him talk about the album, you’ve seen where he describes it as a personal revelation from old to new. And for me, here’s why it’s my mood for 2017:

“No matter how much they gon’ shade you…they can’t stop the shine!”

Woah. Shamed. Humiliated. Ridiculed. Been there done that. There’s a light that no matter how hard they try to take away your life, they can’t take away the light. I could go on and on about this one, but after they try you–there’s no greater feeling but to bounce back.

Faith of a mustard seed, I kept growing. I knew that this life was meant for me..”

If you’re a real one, you know how to bounce back. All of us take Ls, but the true test of a man is his ability to get back on his feet. Over come it. All. Of. That. I feel like 2017 has made way for this epiphany. I’ve witnessed many people compare the things they have been through as major losses in their life, but the wins after those losses are way worth it. And bouncing back honestly places you in the mind set to come back stronger for whatever, knowing that every thing that is lined up is for the taking.

“Never needed favors or apologies, that’s my new lifetime policy.”

Honestly. Self explanatory.

The question isn’t do he love you, the question is do you love yourself? You give the best advice to your friends and not take it for yourself.”

*Sigh* And here comes the transition into relationships and love life. I loved how Big Sean took us through this normal thought process we all experience when it comes to someone we think that we should be with. I’d be lying if I said no one ever thinks of this. Constant thoughts of “I wish you were mine” and “Leave that bum that you’re with alone.” If you want to get in your feelings about the one that got away, listen to this gem.

Every time you call, you know I’ma come get you; every time I’ma come with you.”

As soon as you read that one, I’m sure someone popped in your head. (You’re thinking about them now, haha.) It’s just that one person in our lives that make us drop whatever we’re doing to be at their side. Admit it.

“Let’s not ever disrespect what I meant to you. It took us being over to see all I did for you.”

Sometimes it’s better for you to be apart, then together. Let him or her go, sis, bro.

“Everything around me gold like I just practiced alchemy…”

al•che•my : noun – a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.   see ‘2017’

“Feel like I sent the prayers up and got blessed back, woah.”

So glad that God still hears my prayers and still even finds me worthy enough to grant me something in return. I like this track especially because this was a different side of Big Sean. More talking to God and realizing that He does really keep you throughout this journey called life. No matter what.

“Mama, you the one, you the one you the one. You the moon you the stars, you the sun.”

Shout out to the moms out there that help put you right back on track. And this song is just so presh. Love you mama!

“I done made sacrifices, so many sacrifices. I done gave up so much free time knowing time ain’t free…To get ahead man, you gotta make sacrifices. *Forget* it though, that’s how hungry my appetite is!”

Never not grinding, never not working. If ‘Bounce Back’ wasn’t my soundtrack for 2017, ‘Sacrifices’ definitely is simply because I’m in the process of making a lot of sacrifices to get to where I want to be. As you should. One of my mentors in college used to say to us every chance he got, “If you do today what others don’t, you’ll have tomorrow what others won’t.” (Big shout outs to Mr. Andre Heath, haha.)

“And when you feel something you can’t see, but you know it’s meant to be, you gon’ realize that this was bigger than me.”

After it’s all said and done, everything I’ve went through was for a bigger purpose. “Never let the little things in life distract you from the bigger picture.” Ultimately, from all the setbacks, love losses and gains, and sacrifices it’s all for a greater reason. This is what I’ve Decided.
